A World without walls
everyday life while homeschooling overseas
Dubai. A haven for the filthy rich in the middle of the desert. It's the Las Vegas of the Middle East. We opted for a 24 hour layover here on our way back to the US. Full of adventure for all! Whew! It was HOT HOT HOT! Man. I thought Sri Lanka was hot--and it is--but Dubai is hotter! Not as humid, though. We had a really lovely day. We got in late, got lovely rooms, slept in late, then meandered over to a bakery place to get a late breakfast. That place was AMAZING!!! First of all, their entire menu was on iPads which we each got to peruse. Then while we were waiting for our orders, they brought us never-ending bread, butter, and fresh olives. Mmmmmm... The food was GLORIOUS. And the manager came and brought us extra french fries (because, as he said, "I want you to eat!") AND a giant plate of danishes and croissants, all for free! Wow! It was SO good! We continued on our way and walked through a giant air conditioned 'hallway' over the streets and roads, so we didn't have to walk in the heat so much. :) Then we came to The Mall. Holy Cow. There are no words. It's its own city. We got lost a lot. We found the indoor aquarium where you could not only walk through the tunnel of fish, but you could scuba with the sharks! Sheesh! The most fun, though, was the ice rink. Seriously. It is an ice rink in the middle of the mall in the Middle East. This was our end of the year outing, so the kids all went ice skating while Devin and I watched them. I was so proud! Even Andrew and Peter went out for their first time ever! I loved it! The only thing I didn't love was this crazy guy who kept going in circles (showing off for his girlfriend) and you could tell he was losing control...then he'd usually crash and slam into a wall. Once he took out a kid, and that was super scary! I was pretty upset that they kept letting him back on. By the third time he did that, it seemed the workers there were keeping a better eye on him, so I suppose it was ok? On our way out of the mall, we found tickets to go up to the 'top' of the Burj Khalifa--the tallest building in the world! Wow. The elevator was SO COOL! The doors closed...and then my ears started to pop! I looked up and the numbers of the floors we were passing were just zooming away! We didn't even feel the elevator start to move! It was crazy! We made it up to the 124th floor in like 20 seconds or something ridiculous like that. It was quite the view! The only thing I was sad about was that we didn't get to see the fountain show. I was hoping to see it, but everyone was SO tired, that we just sat around and rested until our flight late that night. When we were checking in at the airport, Andrew asked the lady where she was from, and she said she was from Africa. We asked her which country...and she said Cameroon!! Wow!! Then she asked who was Emily, and that was her name, too! Ha! Small world! It was so fun to sit a chat about Cameroon. :) And boy, I love to make people at the airport smile. They don't look like that happens often. The rest of our trip was fairly uneventful. All flights on time. More or less. Lots of movie watching and interesting airplane food. Catnaps and uncomfy seats. Good times. And now, another adventure begins.

One of the families that was in the cast with us at Hill Cumorah Pageant has lived in Dubai for the past 3 years. He says he still finds places in those malls that he didn't know existed. They love the adventure of living there!

Emily's books
by Dan Brown
I like that the plot twists and turns a lot...and it makes you think. However, I don't appreciate Dan Brown's endings in his books. I find the endings incongruent with the rest of his stories--why make it a romance for the last chapter...

I loved this book. I'm a sucker for fairy tales/fantasy. This was so well written! I can't wait to read all the rest of her books!

I'm reading this one again. I liked it the first time I read it. I'm still liking it for the second time around. I like all of Shannon Hales' books.
