A World without walls
everyday life while homeschooling overseas
Time seems to be against me lately. It seems as though each day passes in a minute...a week is an hour...a month is an hour and a half. How that works out mathematically, I don't know, but it's sure making it difficult to get anything done!! School seems to be getting busier and busier. I'm really grateful that we homeschool, because I honestly can't imagine how I'd manage all this stuff if the kids spent all day away. Well, I suppose I could imagine it: It would be a lot less fun and varied. They wouldn't be doing the extra awesome electives that they're doing now, because they'd be riding a bus for hours a day instead. Anyway, we've had some pretty incredible opportunities pop up for the kids lately and it's such a blessing and answer to prayers! I'm sure I wrote about the fact that Josh will be skipping a grade and heading into 9th grade next year. (I'm still in shock over the fact that I'll have a high schooler next year!!!) He seems to have grown up overnight. I don't know what to do with myself! He is my Mr. Electronics, and is taking online classes in robotics, programming (C), and Adobe Illustrator. Yes, Adobe Illustrator. He's planning to start a journalism club to get together with other teens in Colombo and make a magazine by teens for teens! Cool, eh? He has an amazing mentor who is helping him get organized and make contacts and learn what goes into not only making a magazine, but starting a business! Claire LOVING her baking class...I need to post pics of her here! I keep posting on facebook, but my blog is more permanent, so I need to double dip, I think. She bakes something pretty much every day. Which is good...she's doing well in her class. Not sure I'm looking forward to this week's new class on pies...but she'll do well, I think. Hmmm...I don't think I have any pie tins... I'd better look into that... Other than baking, though, is her horseback riding class which is really helping to give her confidence! I love watching her sit up straight and strong on her horse! And a lovely lady comes once a week to teach her (us, really) handicraft things! Last week we made gift tags...this week, thank you cards... and in the mix we have quilling, parchment crafts, pottery painting, cake decorating... So much fun! AND, the BEST class of all: She's started at a Salon Academy! Ha!!! There is a lady in our church who owns a salon, and she is a super OVER qualified teacher with her own Academy! She has taken Claire under her wing, so she'll go over there once a week and learn all about beauty and health and how to do all the salon things (manicures, pedicures, massage, facials, hair cutting/dyeing, etc.), which is her ultimate dream! The coolest thing: She'll get an AMAZING portfolio which is totally legit through the govt here, plus certifications and a LOT of 'on the job' work experience. This is SO exciting to me! She LOVES to do arts and crafts and make salons in her room. Now she's learning more about them from professionals! Incredible! And the little boys? Well, they're enjoying the fact that with Josh and Claire so much busier, they get more free time to create! They make huge Lego cities, have wars, make movies, and enjoy the bunnies! :) Andrew got to shoot a 'real savage' bow and arrow at archery a few weeks ago, too. He was so funny: "Now I can shoot like a Savage!" Not sure what he meant by that, but it was funny. Isn't that the sweetest thing? Those boys LOVE those bunnies. They're sitting up on the air conditioner unit hugging the bunnies and chatting. Love all my kids so much!!

Emily's books
by Dan Brown
I like that the plot twists and turns a lot...and it makes you think. However, I don't appreciate Dan Brown's endings in his books. I find the endings incongruent with the rest of his stories--why make it a romance for the last chapter...

I loved this book. I'm a sucker for fairy tales/fantasy. This was so well written! I can't wait to read all the rest of her books!

I'm reading this one again. I liked it the first time I read it. I'm still liking it for the second time around. I like all of Shannon Hales' books.
