A World without walls
everyday life while homeschooling overseas
We work hard. We do desk work and history and science experiments and read lots of books and do PE and art and all sorts of projects. Two weeks ago Josh, Claire and Andrew did their big standardized tests. They all did AWESOME, placing in the 90th percentile overall (their language mechanics skills definitely brought their average down! Doh!). Then last week, a HUGE tree fell over in front of our house and knocked out our internet for an entire week. Did that stop our learning? No way! I think it enhanced it! Ha! Everyone finished with their desk work in record time in the mornings--I'm thinking I may have to unplug the router during desk work--I think everyone would get things done a whole heck of a lot faster! That thought does have merit...I may have to look into it! :) We sure got a lot done in school that week, even without the internet!! Josh was 'cleaning' his room and found a new friend: He was rather large and scary--I'm super proud of myself for catching him! We even set him free...after he sat on our coffee table so we could observe him for a few days. I think the biggest reason why I didn't kill the dude was because he was so big, he'd make a really gross mess if I smashed him. :/ Bleh. Bugs and I usually have a pact--if they're outside, I leave them alone. If they venture into my house, they're fair game. This guy found a loophole. Such is life. He's harmless, just big and gross looking. Since he eats bugs, like mosquitoes, I'll let him live. This other happening was from a few weeks ago. People kept leaving my hair long in the back and it was driving me CRAZY!!! Seriously insane!!! So, I had Claire trim the back! It was scary, as you can see by my face, but hey, it was gone when she was done, and she really did a pretty great job!! Well, in the end, when it really came down to it, I realized that I just don't like long hair on me. It's just not ME. No matter how hard I try, I just can't do it anymore. I realized that I was trying to grow my hair out to please others around me. Instead of feeling happy, I would look in the mirror every morning and think how incredibly awful I looked and I felt miserable! So, I did it. I bit the bullet and went to the hair salon that many of my friends have been recommending for months. I came out with ME! I feel SO happy with my short spunky hairstyle. It comes down to the fact that no matter what other people say, you need to be happy and ok with who YOU are. If you spend all your time trying to please other people, you'll never be happy. This is one of the biggest lessons that I'm learning from my amazing children who have no fear of being themselves: BE YOURSELF, NO MATTER WHAT! God loves you for YOU, and that's a pretty amazing thing!

Emily's books
by Dan Brown
I like that the plot twists and turns a lot...and it makes you think. However, I don't appreciate Dan Brown's endings in his books. I find the endings incongruent with the rest of his stories--why make it a romance for the last chapter...

I loved this book. I'm a sucker for fairy tales/fantasy. This was so well written! I can't wait to read all the rest of her books!

I'm reading this one again. I liked it the first time I read it. I'm still liking it for the second time around. I like all of Shannon Hales' books.
**Still lots of fun the second time around! I do like this book for a comfortable...
